Tosh Welcomes HCHS Teachers

Congratulations to HCHS CTE Department

The Henry County High School CTE (Career and Technical Education) Department has won one of the William Atchison Plus Endowment Grants to be awarded Tuesday night, September 27th. Ms. Faye Hooper, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) teacher will be heading up a collaborative project alongside several other CTE teachers that will encompass a wide range of curriculums including: STEM, Animal Care, Animal Science, Agricultural Business, Accounting, Marketing, Digital Arts, Automotive, Principles of Manufacturing, and Foods. We are very excited to be partnering with them for this project. This will be a farm to table project that will look at all of the different aspects of the pork industry and follow the process that is required for pork production. This project will be focusing on internships, job shadowing, and the nine aspects of industry.

The first stage of this project was to introduce the teachers to Tosh Farms. We welcomed 12 teachers to our farm to see the ins and outs of pig farming last Thursday. Our Veterinarian, Dr. Seth Krantz and Enterprise Manager, Danny Ham showed them the business aspect, then went behind the scenes to the manufacturing side. Teachers watched on as Fabrication Manager, Richie Cannon demonstrated the different equipment used and products made at Tosh. From the fab shop, we went to the feed mill. A large part of the STEM project will focus on the feed mill, so teachers watched as trucks were loaded and feed mixtures were specialized for individual deliveries. Students will be concentrating on the composition of these mixtures as well as the nutritional values and cost ratios of the feed process at Tosh. From there, the aroma of the warehouse drew their attention. Teachers spoke with Maintenance Supervisor, Gary Allen about his job and what he looks for in employees. A tour to Tosh wouldn’t be complete without seeing the pigs, so we wrapped up at the barn where the teachers saw the finished product, the top hog.

Overall, this was a great experience and we can’t wait to see where this project takes us. It’s very rewarding when we can help in the molding of our future. Education is a very important aspect at Tosh Farms and we are very excited to be a part of this. Congratulations to all of the teachers involved in this project and we look forward to working with the students in the stage two.
