Spending Bill Includes Money to Fight PEDv

Congress included $2 million in its annual spending package to address Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv).

According to The Des Moines Register, funding for PEDv was buried deep within the 1,603-page spending bill. The funding was just a small fraction of the $1.01 trillion spending bill, which was passed over the weekend.

The federal government reports the funds will be used for research and surveillance.

We are “pleased that Congress is recognizing the seriousness of PEDv and the need for research and surveillance on this devastating disease,” said Dave Warner, a spokesman with the National Pork Producers.

PEDv is a fast-moving virus first identified in U.S. hog herds in April 2013. Since then, it has killed roughly 8 million piglets. In June, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the department would pump $26 million into fighting the disease, including $11.1 million to support strengthened bio-security practices at farms.
