Department Spotlight: Martin

At Tosh Farms, the Martin Sow Department plays a vital role in the success of our operation. Representing breeding, gestation, farrowing, and gilt development, this team works together every day to ensure the health, care, and progress of our herd — and each other.
From weaning and moving sows to insemination, pressure washing, and ongoing training, the Martin team believes learning never stops. Their commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement keeps daily operations running smoothly while supporting the future of Tosh.
A Legacy of Growth:
Established in 2006, Martin began with 3,300 Camborough sows and a team of 12. Over the years, the department has grown through major milestones — including the addition of gilt development, expanded facilities, and a 2016 growth project that added 672 farrowing crates and new breeding and gestation barns. Each expansion has helped strengthen production and improve results.
Team Culture That Feels Like Family:
What truly sets this department apart is its strong culture of mutual support, empathy, and inclusion. Experienced team members guide new employees, creating a workplace built on patience, teamwork, and shared success.
Life Beyond the Barn:
Outside of work, you’ll find team members spending time with family and friends, fishing, riding horses, playing soccer, going to church, and enjoying music — activities that strengthen the bonds they bring back to work each day.
Proud Moments & Looking Ahead:
After nearly two decades, the team says their greatest accomplishment is simple but powerful: staying positive and always moving forward — through every challenge and every success.
Martin is also known for innovation, becoming the first farm in the United States to implement ESF (Electronic Sow Feeding), demonstrating a long history of embracing new technology and better ways of working.
Looking ahead, the future includes internet connectivity throughout the barns, a new pig flow system, and potential renovations to older farrowing rooms — all steps toward continued improvement and growth.
The Heart of Martin:
With deep experience, strong teamwork, and a desire to keep learning, the Martin Sow Department continues to be a cornerstone of Tosh Farms — proving that when people support each other, great things happen.
